The winter school will take place in Chorin, a village in the district of Barnim in Brandenburg, Germany. Chorin is a place famous for its medieval Brick Gothic Chorin Abbey (http://www.kloster-chorin.org) and for its location within an amazing beech forest (Biosphere Reserve Schorfheide-Chorin) under the protection of the UNESCO (like e.g., the Grand Canyon National Park and the forest in the Carpathian Mountains).

The most direct way to reach Hauptbahnhof is with the Airport Express Bus (TXL). The bus runs in the direction of ''S+U Alexanderplatz via Hauptbahnhof“ and comes roughly every ten minutes. Hauptbahnhof is five stations away from the airport and the trip takes roughly 30 minutes. However, depending on how heavy traffic is, it would be wise to plan in some extra time so as not to miss the connecting train at Hauptbahnhof.
The bus ticket costs 2.70€.

Directions from Schönefeld Airport to the main train station (Hauptbahnhof)

There are several connections from this airport to Hauptbahnhof. The quickest routes are via regional trains or via S-Bahn (city trains). The regional trains RE7 and RB14 go directly from Schönefeld to Hauptbahnhof. The RE7 in the direction of Dessau, Hauptbahnhof and the RB14 in the direction of Nauen, Bahnhof both get you to Hauptbahnhof in five stations and 30-35 minutes. Alternatively, one can take the S9 in the direction of S+U Pankow until Ostkreuz and then change onto the S7 in the direction of ''Potsdam Hauptbahnhof“ until Hauptbahnhof. This connection takes about 40-45 minutes. The regional trains are quicker, however the city trains arrive much more frequently.

Train Connections from Berlin main train station to Chorin

From Berlin, one must take the train Regionalexpress 3 (RE3) in the direction of Schwedt or Stralsund. The train leaves once every hour from Berlin Central Station (Berlin Hauptbahnhof) and the trip takes roughly 45 minutes. Chorin is the third station after Berlin.

The accommodation of the winterschool is in the 3 star hotel “Haus Chorin” (http://www.chorin.de/). Participants will stay in double rooms (with shower, WC, TV and telephone), free Wi-Fi and receive full board during the winterschool. Prices are 388 Euro for undergraduate students and 438 Euro for postdocs or more senior researchers. Two accessible rooms are available for those who require disabled access (Please let us know, if you have particular requirements). The hotel also includes a sauna and fitness area.

Apart from the hotel restaurant there is additionally the „Immenstube“, the first honey speciality restaurant in Germany and the “Alte Klosterschänke Chorin” (old abbey tavern). The Immenstube is close to the hotel and the Alte Klosterschänke within 10 minutes walking distance to the hotel crossing the lake “Amtssee”. It is built in a traditional wooden half-timber.

The hotel restaurant is a member of the regional brand and receives large parts of their food from regional producers, particularly from those who sell biological products. Roast venison is one of the specialties of the region.

Touristic activities

The following touristic activities could be easily done, depending on weather conditions:

Depending on the weather conditions (the weather could be between -10 to +10 °C in January) and the choice of the participants, we will organize one or two of these events. Information about these activities will be provided to the participants. We have organized half a day off (Wednesday morning as morning will be better for activities in winter) for some of these touristic attractions.

These activities are closely linked to the region, the long lasting history in this area, and ecological diversity.
